Description

Verona - The restoration of the church of Santa Lucia Extra (VR)

The restoration of the church of Santa Lucia Extra (VR), built between the '800 and the '900, concerned both the rooftop and the decorated vault.

A serious structural damage, which had interested also the decorated vault, had required a first partial restoring two decades ago but the dangerous, fast deteriorating structural damage had made a new intervention urgent and undelayable in order to prevent possible collapse of the building.

In September 2012 falling of plaster fragments from the vault led to a first inspection of the attic. The Parrish considered worthwhile to request the "Soprintendenza" permission for provisional works allowing both worship in the Church and safe access to the attic for the necessary survey.

The provisional works carried out were lightening of the rooftop, removal of the tiles and laying of protective nets inside nave.

Despite this intervention, fallowing monitoring revealed the fast growing deterioration of the rooftop, which could not withstand serious weather conditions, thus requiring other provisional and safety works. In November 2013, a tubolar system was constructed to hold up and stabilize the rooftop to prevent collapse.

Completed restoration works were carried out between July and Decembre 2014. The worksite was covered with a special movable provisional roofing which allow safe working and protection of interior decorations.
